Drake Maye shines as Patriots beat Giants to move to 11-2
QuarterbackDrake Maye and the New England Patriots are still rolling.
Maye played great in a 33-15 win over the New York Giants on Monday night. He completed 24 of 31 passes for 282 yards, threw 2 touchdown passes, and had no interceptions. With the win, the Patriots are now 11-2, the best record in the NFL, as they head into their bye week.
If the Patriots beat the Bills after the break, they will win the AFC East, ending Buffalo’s run of five straight division titles. The last team besides Buffalo to win the division was the 2019 Patriots.
Maye said the bye week came at the right time. He leads the NFL with 3,412 passing yards and is the only qualified quarterback completing over 70% of his passes this season.
This win was even more impressive because the Patriots were missing several key players, including two starting offensive linemen and multiple defensive tackles.
The Patriots started fast. They kicked a field goal on the first drive, then Marcus Jones returned a punt 94 yards for a touchdown. Soon after, a big hit by linebacker Christian Elliss fired up the team, and they quickly scored again to lead 17-0 at the end of the first quarter.
With the victory, the Patriots’ chances of finishing as the No. 1 seed in the AFC rose from 37% to 46%, according to ESPN.
Maye’s two touchdown passes — one to Kayshon Boutte and one to Kyle Williams — were perfectly thrown. This was his sixth game completing at least 75% of his passes and throwing two touchdowns, tying Matt Ryan (2016) for the third-most in a season. Only Tom Brady (2007) and Jared Goff (2024) have more, and both Brady and Ryan won MVP in those years.
Maye said he wants to lead the offense and take responsibility. He is now the favorite to win NFL MVP, according to DraftKings.
Receiver Stefon Diggs said Maye is playing with confidence. Coach Mike Vrabel added that Maye understands how important he is to the offense and the whole team.
The Patriots have now won 10 games in a row. They will host the Buffalo Bills on Dec. 14, then visit the Baltimore Ravens on Dec. 21
